Some Hoosiers hate winter. The annoyance of snow, having to walk and drive on ice, cabin fever when the darkness sets in and they don’t want to go anywhere, cold and flu. For them, warmer climates to the south and west beckon them, offering relief.
Some love winter. The beauty of snow, skiing and sledding, the comfort of a fire on a cold night … relief from allergies, maybe … and for them, winter is something to embrace rather than escape. Travel for them might mean going off to experience places where winter’s majesty is best on display.
So to please all of you, here are eight getaway ideas this winter: four cold, four warm!
Cold Weather Beauty
- Aurora Winter Train. If you’ve never been to Alaska, this Aurora Winter Train makes a great introduction. The route takes you 360 miles from Anchorage to Fairbanks, treating you to a number of gorgeous natural sights like the awe-inspiring aurora borealis, or Northern Lights.
- Yellowstone National Park. Old Faithful, wildlife, canyons and miles of evergreens are all there year-round, but for the traveler who likes a little peace and quiet, nothing beats the stillness of winter in the park without the crowds.
- Estes Park, Colorado. Part of Rocky Mountain National Park, Estes Park offers wildlife and natural beauty from the comfort of mountain-style cabins with fireplaces and hot tubs. You might not even have to leave your room to see an elk wander down the street!
- Waterville Valley, New Hampshire. Pick your pleasure in this resort town offering skiing, cold weather fishing and hiking, and a variety of entertainment. If you fancy jumping into near-freezing water (or maybe just watching others do it), get down there by November 25th for the Cold Turkey Plunge.
Warm Weather Retreat

- Kauai, Hawaii. You might say this is the most “gorge-ous” part of Hawaii. These 10 miles of 3,500-foot deep gorge earn Kauai the nickname “The Grand Canyon of Hawaii.” Secluded beaches, river kayaking and resorts offer everything a winter-hater dreams of.
- Santa Rosa Beach, Florida. This spot is advertised as family-friendly, laid-back and artsy. Kind of the opposite of nearby spring break favorite Panama City Beach’s reputation. Great place to relax with a glass of wine and watch the sunset over the Gulf.
- South Padre Island, Texas. A snowbird’s paradise, South Padre offers a whole lifestyle on the beach, from dining to entertainment to fishing. You might need to head inland for golf and shopping, but that’s about it.
- The Grand Canyon. You can’t even fathom it until you see it. 277 miles long, up to 18 miles wide, one mile deep (that’s over 5,000 feet, in case you don’t remember from grade school). If it’s not on every Hoosier’s bucket list, it should be. And what better time than winter to go see it?
